Today is the Day of Rare Diseases. These include the disease I suffer from - Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Rare are diseases that occur in less than 5 out of 10,000. Rare disease is a handicap for patients. Mostly these are little known and little researched diseases. There is between 6 and 8 thousand rare diagnoses that are described. Several hundred new diagnoses are described each year.

In some diseases the prognosis and likely development are quite clear, but in many diagnoses it is not clear what the patient is waiting for, how the symptoms will develop or how to treat them properly.

Rare Disease Day is held annually on the last day of February. The purpose of this event is to show the general public and those involved in decision-making on health and social care issues what rare diseases are and what they mean for patients' lives.
